Difference between Brazilian keratin treatment and permanent straightening

healthy-hairIt does not faze Mels Salon when their customers are unable to tell the difference between Brazilian keratin treatments and permanent hair straightener . This is because included in with their services are educating their clients. Nonetheless the most common mistake clients make is that when they ask for a Brazilian treatment they really expect permanently straightened hair.  This post focuses on educating you on the difference between the two salon treatments.

Brazilian Keratin Treatment

The Brazilian Keratin treatment is not a permanent hair straightener. It is in fact  a Treatment!  The main benefit of this treatment, achieved through the elimination of almost 90% of the frizz, making the it silky soft hair. The Brazilian keratin treatment consists of mainly Keratin (proteins which makes up hair, nails and skin). However some keratin products consist of Collagen which provides elasticity to the hair.  The Brazilian Keratin treatment is ironed onto the hair which fills the hair with keratin.  Damages occur from ironing, blow-drying and over processing from chemical like dyes and chlorine.  Once the Keratin treatment is applied, it is then flat ironed to seal the cuticles of each hair strand which makes the hair silky, smooth and shiny. This protection can last between 3-6 months depending on the brand you choose and then depending on how often you shampoo your hair. Each time you wash your  hair, the treatment will gradually wear away.  If you want to prolong the treatment you should use the recommended shampoos which contain Keratin and Collagen.  Once the treatment washes off completely, your hair will then return to its original state therefore no root touch ups would be required.

Permanent Hair Straightener

Unlike keratin treatments, Permanent hair straightening treatments are permanent.  They are designed to straighten and relax the hair removing most curls and waves from the hair permanently. These treatments contain a chemical that breaks the bonds of the hair which give each strand its straight shape. This treatment is suitable for only curly hair types. Keep in mind that…since this treatment permanently changes the natural structure of the hair, you have to continue with the root touch up or endure a grow-out period with the noticeable difference between the regrowth and the rest of the hair. Because of its chemical base, there is a risk of damaging the hair . If your hair is over processed you would be wiser to go for an alternate treatment like a keratin treatment.  The Permanent hair straitening treatment should be applied by a qualified stylist who evaluates your hair before applying the product. It is important to tell the stylist everything you’ve done to your hair in the past two years.

We hope that this post helps you understand the difference between the Brazilian keratin treatment and permanent straightening.  If you are still unsure about which service is best for you, ask our stylist to help you decide which treatment is best for you.
